ATIDI SUPPORTS EDUCATION FOR DISPLACED CHILDREN IN BURUNDI
The African Trade & Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) has announced a significant financial contribution of $40,000 to support education for displaced children in Gatumba, Burundi.
In collaboration with Street Child, this donation will finance the construction of six classrooms in two primary schools, marking a vital step in providing sustainable education for children affected by climate-induced displacement.
Burundi, grappling with the aftermath of climate change-related disasters such as torrential rains, strong winds, and rising waters from Lake Tanganyika, has seen large-scale displacement. The education sector has been particularly hard-hit, with over 80% of schools in Gatumba affected by flooding, leaving more than 30,000 children at risk of missing out on education.
ATIDI's CEO, Manuel Moses, emphasized the importance of education in fostering long-term development. "Education is the cornerstone of sustainable development, and we are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children in Burundi. By supporting the construction of these classrooms, we are investing in the future of these young minds and contributing to growth across the continent," Moses stated.
The project aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) to provide quality education and is also in line with Burundi's National Development Plan (2018–2027) and the Ministry of National Education and Scientific Research's Sectoral Plan (2020–2023). The newly constructed classrooms, located in the “Kigwati” and “Village du Développement” primary schools, will provide education access to 300 children displaced by the Gatumba floods.
Street Child Country Representative Jolien Van den Broeck expressed deep gratitude for ATIDI’s contribution, highlighting the impact on the community. "This donation is about more than just building classrooms—it is about restoring hope and creating opportunities for displaced children," Van den Broeck said. "At Street Child, we believe that every child deserves the chance to learn, no matter their circumstances."
In addition to classroom construction, the project will involve community mobilization and ongoing engagement with local stakeholders to ensure long-term sustainability. A key objective is to foster a sense of ownership among the local community and administration, ensuring that the schools are properly maintained and function effectively, guaranteeing quality education for all children.
ATIDI’s support is part of its wider corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts to promote sustainable development, address pressing social challenges, and enhance economic stability across Africa.
